The History of Kossuth County Tails of Hope Rescue

The history of our rescue group began, we believe, in 1997, with a small group of people dedicated to helping animals in need throughout Kossuth County.

By 2004, documents show that the group had helped establish and get the dog park up and running at Veterans Park in Algona. During this time, members also worked to clean up and improve the city pound and advocated for a designated animal control contact person. The group regularly organized spay and neuter clinics, helping local families access important veterinary services and working to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community.

In 2009, the organization experienced a change in membership and direction. Between 2009 and 2010, Homeward Bound joined with Kossuth Animal Rescue, bringing the two efforts together under one united mission. This transition also established separate savings projects—one dedicated to building funds for future rescue needs and another focused on ongoing operational expenses such as spay/neuter services, veterinary care, insurance, and other necessities.

In 2018, the rescue officially became Algona Rescue Family (ARF). That same year marked an exciting new chapter as a building was purchased to provide a dedicated home for rescued animals. The former KLGA building became a safe haven for many animals awaiting veterinary care, foster placement, adoption, and their forever homes.

In 2024, another important chapter began. A new board of directors was formed, the organization adopted the name Kossuth County Tails of Hope Rescue, and a new initiative began with a renewed commitment to rebuild, strengthen, and improve the rescue in every way possible.

As part of this renewed effort, committees were created for fundraising, grants, veterinary care, supplies, and grooming. Each committee plays an important role in making sure the animals in our care receive the resources, attention, medical treatment, and love they deserve.

Today, Kossuth County Tails of Hope Rescue carries forward decades of dedication from the individuals who came before us. From community projects and spay/neuter clinics to providing a safe building for rescued animals, the mission has remained the same: to give animals hope, provide compassionate care, and help them find loving, permanent homes.
